BMW Cleverly Simplifies urban transport

BMW recently revealed a couple of additions to its special 'Concept Vehicles exhibition' at the BMW Museum in Munich.

Called the Simple (Sustainable and Innovative Mobility Product for Low Energy consumption) and the Clever (Compact Low Emissions Vehicle for Urban transport), these two unique three wheelers concepts from the recent past are designed to showcase various innovations in personal mobility through novel vehicle and drive concepts.
Both the Simple and the Clever offer a passenger cell like a car that provides protection from wind and weather as well as shielding the driver from exterior noise and offering occupants a high degree of safety in the event of an accident. But the narrow profile and tandem seating position, as well as the Simple's and Clever's ability to lean into corners resembles that of a bike. With a kerb weight of only 450kg, a 49PS petrol motor and an excellent drag coefficient of 0.18 allows the Simple to achieve a zero to 100 time of under 10 seconds.
Combined with a 6kWh electric motor, this fancy three-wheeler can dish out a fuel economy of about 50kmpl. The Clever offers a smaller footprint than the Simple, with its overall length at 3 meters, a full meter shorter and also 50kg lighter. The Clever aims at extremely low emissions in the region of 60gm of CO2 for every 100km, and for this, comes with a 230cc single cylinder engine that runs on CNG. No current production plans for either exist, but a future cityscape with leaning three-wheelers running amok on the streets is just up our alley.

Bajaj to use bike parts in 1 lakh car

A joint venture between Nissan -Renault and Bajaj Auto, which plans to launch a low-cost car to compete with the Tata Nano, will have 70 to 80 per cent f its parts in common with those used in the Pune-based company's scooters, motorcycles and three-wheelers. This will result in the project cost for the new car being pared down from Rs 1,500 crore to around Rs 200-300 crore.

In May 2008, Bajaj, Nissan and Renault had announced plans to manufacture 4,00,000 ultra low cost (ULC) cars per year at a new plant, which would have cost Rs 1,500 crore. Nearly all aspects of that earlier agreement have now changed. "I don't have a number as yet but my estimate is that it would be closer to around 20% of the earlier investment figure due to common product aggregates and common facilities," Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj told ET.
Bajaj Auto has a 50 per cent stake in the JV while Nissan and Renault have 25% each. "There is excess capacity in the global car maket. Our thinking was that if the ULC is a standalone project, it will be vulnerable to business cycles. We decided to derisk the project by leaning on our motorcycle and three-wheelers for its platform and aggregates. Around 70-80% of the internal components should be common," said Mr Bajaj.
Announced in 2007, the project experienced turbulence over branding and product detail. This summer, Rajiv Bajaj went on record to say he had asked for all the work done on the project to be scrapped. He wanted major modifications on design, positioning and other details. The new concept that his team came up with has now met with Carlos Ghosn's approval, following which an announcement was made on a fresh agreement between the partners.

Ferrari 360 Spider

The Ferrari 360 is a mid-engine two-seater sports car produced from late 1999 until 2005. The 360 replaced the Ferrari F355 and was itself replaced by the fairly similar Ferrari F430. For the 360, Ferrari partnered with Alcoa to produce an entirely new all-aluminum space-frame chassis that was 40% stiffer than the 355, yet 28% lighter despite a 10% increase in overall dimensions. Along with the new frame was a new Pininfarina body styling that broke ranks with the last decade’s sharp angles and flip-up headlights, replacing them with a rounded appearance that harkened to the 1960s. The new V8 engine, common to all versions, was only slightly larger and more powerful than the 355’s at 3.6 litres and 300 kW (400 bhp) of power, but the lighter frame and added stiffness improved performance; the 0 to 100 km/h acceleration performance improved from 4.6 to 4.4 seconds, and in the Challenge versions it was as low as 4.0 s. An engine replacement resulted in the current V8 road model, the F430 (internally referred to as the evoluzione or evo) which came out in 2004.

Hyundai i10 Kappa

Hyundai, the Korean manufacturer is launching a new variant ever so often. The latest addition in their range is the new i10 Kappa, which is an updated version of their famous i10 model. The 'Kappa' is equipped with a new 1.2 liter Kappa engine. According to Hyundai, this new engine results in better power delivery as well as much improved fuel efficiency as well.

The 1.1 liter engine equipped previous i10 has been one of the most successful cars for Hyundai and it will continue to be available in the market, along with the new i10 Kappa. However, with the launch of the new and improved i10 Kappa, the company has improved on what was already a great car to begin with. The Kappa is available in three variants, namely Magna, Sportz and Asta.

The engine capacity of the new variant is has been increased from 1.1 liters to 1.2 liters. The i10 1.2 liter Kappa also comes with an automatic transmission which is something that has never been seen, especially in this segment. The car offers 81 bhp of solid power, which is pretty good for a car of its size and weight. The performance figures of the car are pretty impressive as well. It can do a 0-100km/hr. dash in about 12 seconds flat and has a top whack of 165m/hr.

The all-new Kappa engine was developed over a period of 48 months. It is an all-aluminum, 4 cylinder block that features Double Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) and breathes through 16 valves. Not only this, the 1.2 liter engine is Euro-V compliant with the CO2 emission level standing at a bare minimum of just 119g/ km which is the lowest ever in this segment of cars. Not only the engine is a technological marvel, but the whole car is packed with some mouth-watering features. Things like sunroof, 2-Din audio system, a red pack interior (for the Sportz version) and some class leading safety features like ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and dual airbags are present as well. These features, up until now were the forte of higher segment (C and D segment) cars.

Hyundai is pricing the car quite competitively as well, with the Magna going for a launch price of about Rs.3,99,023 whereas the Sportz and Asta are priced at Rs.4,26,869 and Rs.4,85,678, ex-showroom. As expected, the automatic versions are a little expensive than the manual transmission versions but still a great value-for-money proposition nonetheless. Magna Automatic is available for a launch price of Rs.4,44,913 while the automatic versions of Sportz and Asta are available for Rs.4,69,580 and Rs.5,43,644 respectively.

With the launch of the Hyundai i10 Kappa, Hyundai surely has raised the bar in this segment to an all new level and perhaps even redefined the expectations of the consumers of this class.

Hyundai I-Series

After reveling in the success of its i10 car, Hyundai is back to 'work' again. The South Korea-based automobile manufacturer is all planning to launch its entire range of i-series cars in India. The mind-blowing achievement of Hyundai's i10 model in India has encouraged the company to launch its i20 model in October - December 2008. Following soon after, will be the launch of Hyundai i30 and Hyundai i40, in the coming years.

As per HS Lheem, Managing Director and CEO - Hyundai Motors, the company has plans of bringing the entire portfolio of the new i-series cars to India. Hyundai expects i30 and i4, its premium cars in the 'i-series', to have a significant potential in the country, considering the fast growing Indian market for luxury cars. Apart from releasing the new models, Hyundai will also strengthen the i10 portfolio, with a new engine and an automatic transmission

Presently, Hyundai counts amongst the largest car manufacturers in India as well as the second largest importer of cars, next only to Maruti Suzuki. The company is now formulating plans to gear its operations in the country, with the aim of becoming its largest car manufacturer. Amongst the numerous steps taken by it, in this regard, is making India its manufacturing and exports hub, for its small cars. Let us hope that Hyundai manages to realize its aim and woo Indian audience with its new range.

2008 Lamborghini Reventon

2008 Lamborghini Reventon
Clearly a Lamborghini, but nothing quite like it. A super car without equals: the Lamborghini Reventon is a road vehicle with an extreme specification and, at the same time, a limited edition masterpiece – a coherent style, angular with sharp lines, inspired by the very latest aeronautics.
With just 20 produced, each 1 Million Euro (without taxes) Lamborghini Reventon is a symbol of extreme exclusivity, yet still offering the extraordinary performance that makes the Reventon so unrivalled: under the completely autonomous design, the Reventon possesses the entire technical and dynamic competence of the twelve cylinder Lamborghini.
Lamborghini prides itself on being the extraordinary manufacturer of extreme super sports cars without compromise. Sensuality and provocation characterise every Lamborghini, with an aggressively innovative style. "However, the Reventon is the most extreme of all, a true automotive superlative. Our designers at the Lamborghini Style Centre took the technical base of the Murcielago LP640 and compressed and intensified its DNA, its genetic code," affirms Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A.

Nissan Engine

A V6 engine is a V engine with six cylinders. It is the second most common engine configuration in modern cars after the straight-4; it shares with that engine a compactness very suited to the popular front-wheel drive layout, and is becoming more popular as car weights increase. The first V6 was introduced by Lancia in 1950 with the Lancia Aurelia, other manufacturers took note and soon other V6 engines were in use. The design really took off after the 1962 introduction of the Buick Special. Though the model was not a spectacular success, it was the first mass-produced V6 engine. In 1983 Nissan produced Japan's first V6 engine with the VG series.

The heart and soul of the Z, since the original 1970 model, is its engine. Again for 2006, every 350Z offers a standard 3.5-liter VQ35DE V6 engine, which delivers not only outstanding start-off acceleration and high-speed passing performance, but also torque characteristics suitable for city driving. The engine utilizes an advanced intake port design and Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS) technology. Drivability has been further improved by adopting an electronically controlled “drive-by-wire” throttle and the use of a highly rigid cylinder block.

Aluminum block and heads reduce engine weight, contributing to improved fuel economy and performance. Lighter pistons and connecting rods trim mass, allowing the engine to respond and rev more freely, while lightweight, hollow camshafts help reduce energy losses when the engine is running. The Z also features a lightweight, one-piece, carbon fiber reinforced plastic driveshaft unit.

Along with a powerful engine, the Z produces a powerful sports car sound to match – one without the low frequency booming or rumbling that can grow tiresome on long trips or high-pitched mechanical sounds. The exhaust sound is maximized at low RPM (1,000-3,500 RPM), but quiet at normal cruising range. Intake sound is maximized at high RPM (3,500-6,000 RPM), especially at wide throttle openings, but toned down during cruising.

Steering Wheel

The leather-wrapped steering wheel looks and feels great, and comes with cruise controls. Tilt the steering column and the main pod of gauges moves with it, ensuring a clear view of the instruments for drivers of all sizes.

Instrument Cluster

The instruments consist of a big tachometer and flanking speedometer, fuel and temperature gauges. Nestled in three pods on top of the dash are a voltmeter, an oil pressure gauge and a digital trip computer. Reminiscent of the original Z, they look retro-cool, but reading them requires more than a glance.

Nissan 350Z Interior standard Features:

Seat Covers

The seats are finished in smooth leather and have manual adjustment. The seating position should be good for drivers with long legs, though the steering wheel felt a little close when the seat was adjusted for the legs of a six-footer. It's worth noting, however, that this feeling went away the moment the key was turned in the ignition as is often the case in race cars.
